This textbook has been prepared for the use of students studying agriculture in the West African Examinations Council’s syllabus for secondary schools. A wide range of crops is covered, but the amount of detail for each is related to its importance. Whilst every effort has been made to cover all aspects of the syllabus, students are urged to seek additional information from other sources. Certain aspects of agriculture are subject to frequent changes as new materials, methods and techniques develop, and new information comes to hand. For example, the number of crop protection products is steadily increasing despite the fact that for environmental or other reasons some of the older chemicals have been withdrawn. This book should be considered as a foundation upon which students can build their knowledge of agriculture. The need to make detailed observations throughout the course of study must be accepted by all serious students.
